Last weekend, Sunday, January 25, Alex Honnold the famous El capitan free solo legend recently climbed the 11th tallest building in the world, Taipei 101. Making him the first man to free solo climb a skyscraper.
Honnold is known as the best free solo climber in the world. He’s been featured on over 15 documentaries. Holds “The Nose” speed record on El capitan, in addition to “The Yosemite Triple Crown” record where he finished in only 11 hours.Â
Honnold stated, “Plot the course and keep your focus”Â
At 508 meters Taipei 101 is known for not just being tall but also for its futuristic design. The building contains bamboo boxes, several concrete facades, ruyis (decorative dragons), and the tower’s spire.Â
Each one of these agricultural designs came with a challenge for Honnold. Whether it’s the seven degree inward slopes of the ruyis or the 100 foot high overhanging sections of the bamboo boxes.Â
Despite these factors he still completed the course in one hour and 32 minutes. Absolute obliterating the record set by Alain Robert in 2004 record of four hours.
