After the great rap beef between Kendrick Lamar and Drake in 2024, Drake went dark. While Kendrick danced around during the Super Bowl halftime show calling him a pedophile on the biggest stage in America, Drake was in the shadows defeated. Months went by and he began to tease a project called “Iceman”. He was creating an aesthetic with pictures of the Marvel superhero and the “Top Gun” character of the same name. After two years, the boy was back with not one album, but two.
Hours before the midnight release of “Iceman”, Drake revealed on a livestream he would have two other albums at midnight as well. “Habibti” and “Maid of Honor” released alongside “Iceman” with a total of 43 Drizzy songs in one night. Each album featured its own style. There was much debate online if this three album concept was a good idea. Some argued it was a good idea because each album has a different flavor of Drake instead of one jumbled mess. If you like Drake when he raps, “Iceman” is your album. On the other hand, some argued that 43 Champagne Papi songs in one night is never a good idea.
In theory, the idea could be cool if handled well. Drake definitely did not. Although he honed in on a specific style each album, there was still no substance. He kind of had something to say on “Iceman” but it was just the usual subliminal disses towards the same people. Nothing truly personal was said. The other two albums had truly nothing to say, just songs to reach the number one spot on the charts. You’d think after years and years of being in the game, the boy wouldn’t care about a number one spot anymore but his albums never show that. They’re treated more as hitmakers than pieces of art.
He doesn’t have to go to the old Drake, recreating albums like “Take Care” but no risks are taken in his career. Being a veteran in any field, you need to switch it up to stay relevant. Drizzy is very much still relevant but doesn’t understand what it takes. He’s an interesting figure in the rap game. So much criticism is sent his way but he always manages to be on top.
For now, the three albums idea was a failure but maybe someone can come along with a proper trilogy to release, proving it does work. Hopefully the boy takes a break for a while and can come back with something so generational, it shakes up the rap game.
