As graduation approaches, students across the country are more than excited to receive their diplomas, signifying the end of high school, as graduations represent the end of a major chapter in life. The following are common emotions that Seniors will feel upon graduating;
Pride
To some, graduation is one of the biggest accomplishments in a student’s life. After years of showing up to classes, keeping up with assignments, studying for tests, and overcoming obstacles, students finally reach a moment that they worked toward for a long time. Earning a diploma represents dedication and perseverance. Students may feel proud not only of their academic success, reminding graduates of how far they have come.
Sadness
Despite graduation meaning to be a celebratory event meant for joy, it can also be heartbreaking and difficult. Leaving behind people they have known and places that are familiar with for years. Friendships may become distant when they move away for college, work, or other opportunities. Teachers, coaches, and guiding figures who helped students will no longer be part of their daily lives.
Relief
Too many, Graduation marks the end of responsibilities and allows students a chance to finally breathe and relax. Many graduates having a feeling of huge weight lifted off their shoulders once finals are over and ceremonies conclude. The relief can feel emotional once students realize they no longer have to worry about grades, homework, or schedules every day.
Fear/Anxiety
Graduation also brings uncertainty, with many students worrying of what comes next. Starting college, entering the workforce, or making major life decisions cross many minds of graduates. stress and anxiety about careers, finances, independence, and success. Some graduates feel pressure to have their future fully planned out, even when they are unsure of their goals. Fear of making mistakes or not meeting expectations and the coming of adulthood can feel pressuring.
Nostalgia
Students look back at the experiences throughout their time in high school, memories of sports games, dances, field trips, classroom jokes, and everyday school moments with friends become meaningful and cherished past. Looking back at old photos or yearbooks then realizing how quickly time passed. Nostalgia can bring happiness and sadness simultaneously, as graduates appreciate the memories they created while also wishing they could relive those moments once more.
Bittersweet
For many students, especially myself, graduation is best described as bittersweet. The combination of joy and sadness into one feeling. The excitement of their accomplishments and future, and yet emotional about leaving behind the comfort and familiarity of school life. Celebrating with friends, then suddenly realize that those moments may never happen again in the same way. Graduation is both a beautiful end and a beginning in a part of our lives, which brings such powerful mix of emotions. In the end, the bittersweetness of graduation is what makes it such a meaningful point in life.
Graduation is one of the biggest milestones, and the emotions that follow can be excitement, confusion, overwhelming, or deeply personal, and if you feel these emotions you should know that they are not alone. Many graduates before you experience the same emotions as you as they leave behind one part of their life and begin another. To the Class of 2026, congratulations on reaching the end. The path to graduation was not easy, but your hard work brought you here. The future may feel uncertain at times, but you alone are more than enough to establish yourself.
