GSA Club, standing for Gay Straight Alliance, is a new club at Granada. The president of the GSA club explained his desire to create a safe and affirming space for every Granada student. This club meets every Wednesday in the GHS Wellness Center, located in the library building.
The president of the GSA club, Kai Sexton, explained the goal and focus of GSA club.
“The purpose of Granada GSA is to create a safe and welcoming environment for everyone at Granada – no matter your background, your race, or your sexuality. We aim to create an affirming space for all students,” Sexton described.
At each meeting, the club engages in many fun activities, aimed at including everyone. Things such as coloring, creating jewelry, and other artistic activities allow club members to have fun interacting with one another.
“An average meeting for us looks like a lot of fun! We usually start out with announcements and then dive into our activity. We have done activities like making Halloween goodie bags, bracelets, coloring, drawing, and other fun things,” said Sexton
Aside from their fun activities, Sexton said that he would like to steer the club in more serious directions at times, partnering with other clubs and committees in Livermore.
“In the future, we are excited to work with LGBTQ Minus Tobacco on some anti-tobacco events, as well as connecting with the Livermore Pride Committee,” explained Sexton.
Granada’s GSA club has already partnered with Livermore Pride once before. In October, the club was granted a booth at the pride festival, at which they raised money for their club, as well as connected with Livermore’s LGBTQ community.
“We were invited by Livermore Pride to have a booth. They were very generous and gave it to us for free. We spent a couple of meetings making homemade jewelry. We even had some students make us a logo. We sold jewelry at a booth to raise money for future club events,” expressed Sexton.
Their booth at Livermore Pride Festival not only allowed the GSA club to raise money for future endeavors but also allowed them to connect with the community.
“We really got connected with the LGBTQ community in Livermore,” said Sexton.
Granada GSA president, Sexton, expressed his plans for the rest of the school year. The GSA club has much to look forward to.
“We plan on using the money we raised for more super fun events like potentially a drag story-time and possibly a pride prom. We just hope to create fun spaces for LGBTQ students to feel welcomed,” exclaimed Sexton.
In short, the Granada GSA club is a welcoming new club on campus, aimed to make LGBTQ students feel safer and affirmed at Granada.
