On January 7, 2026, 37-year-old mother of three Renee Nicole Good was shot and killed by a federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (I.C.E.) agent in Minneapolis, Minnesota. A BWC video captured the incident, showing Good and her wife, Becca Good, using her SUV to block the street in peaceful protest after having dropped her son off at school.
The video shows Good speaking with the officers and recording them with her phone. The situation escalated after an I.C.E. agent ordered Good to exit her vehicle, to which she responded by putting her car in reverse and beginning to drive forward. When she accelerated, she was met with three gun shots through the windshield and driver’s side window by I.C.E. agent Jonathon Ross. She was struck in the head, chest, and forearm, and was pronounced dead shortly after being transported to the hospital.
Federal officials, including DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, claimed Good had been “stalking and impeding” agents and attempted to “weaponize her vehicle” in order to run over an officer. However, local officials and video analysis suggest Good was acting as a “legal observer” and was trying to steer away from the agent when she was shot. When asked about the video, President Donald Trump called Good an “agitator” and a “domestic terrorist.” Vice President JD Vance reposted the video on X, defending the agent’s actions as self defense.
The Department of Justice, under Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, announced later in the month that it would not launch a criminal civil rights investigation into the shooting due to the lack of legal grounds.
The killing sparked public outrage and massive “ICE Out For Good” protests across major U.S. cities, including New York, Washington D.C., Seattle, Portland, and Chicago. In California alone, protests have occurred in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Oakland, Sacramento, San Diego, and Bakersfield. Thousands have gathered for these protests, leading to the deployment of the Minnesota National Guard to support local law enforcement and protect infrastructure, manage traffic, and ensure public safety.
In further protest of the DOJ’s refusal to investigate the shooter and its decision to instead investigate Good’s partner for allegedly impeding the officer, more than a dozen federal prosecutors in Minneapolis and Washington, D.C., have resigned.
Good’s family has retained the law firm of Romanucci & Blandin, the same firm that represented George Floyd’s family after his death in May of 2020, to launch an independent civil investigation. They have also raised over $1.5 million from 38,500 donors with their GoFundMe, which have been put into a trust for her widow and three children to help support their futures.
