On Tuesday, August 27, 2024, only five days after a Copa Libertadores match in a game between Nacional and Sao Paulo, a Uruguayan soccer player Juan Izquierdo passed away at a local hospital. The initial tragic event took place Thursday, August 22, 2024, when the Uruguayan defender collapsed on the field.
Juan Izquierdo was 27 years old when he passed away in a Brazilian hospital in San Paolo.
AP News stated that when rushed to the hospital, more information came out about his “Cardiorespiratory arrest linked to his Cardiac arrhythmia.”
Juan Izquierdo was a man with a family, and a recently born daughter. The family gave out a message from the wife, Selena Izquierdo. The message read, “For many, Juan Izquierdo, my Juanma, my best friend, my husband, the father of my children, my unconditional partner. Today a part of me dies with you.”
The Izquierdo’s soccer club gave out a public statement on the deep feeling on the situation. “In Deep pain and impact in our hearts” and “all Nacional is in grief for his irreplaceable loss.”
CONMEBOL, the South American Sports Association, gave out their condolences. Along with the Argentinian, Uruguayan and Brazilian federations all can say, “South American soccer is in mourning.”
According to AP News, Juan Izquierdo’s formal club Peñarol gave out a statement on their social media platforms on the situation, “Penarol is deeply sorry about the passing of Juan Izquierdo. We express our heartfelt condolences and we embrace his family, his friends and Nacional in this moment of so much pain.”
Even though when Juan joined the club, he didn’t get much playtime, the club still gives out its condolences and wishes the best for the ones who were affected.
The two-time Uruguayan Champions defender’s passing has a great toll and sadness on the behalf of South American soccer. The loss has affected the clubs and families, the world of soccer stopped for the passing of Juan Izquierdo.
