Loved by fans and hated by many more, Labubu collectibles have gone from prized items to forgotten toys, tossed aside as their short lived fame finally begins to fade.
Labubus come in a variety of designs and sizes, but their popularity mainly sprouts from their blind boxes, which appeal specifically to the younger generations.
Social media platforms such as TikTok and YouTube have helped Labubus blow up in popularity, introducing them to people all over the world.
Labubus stands out simply by refusing to blend in. Whether it’s their unconventional style or oddly shaped eyes and teeth, their looks have sparked many divided opinions between fans and critics alike.
Some students at GHS believe that Labubus are worth the hassle of paying high prices and waiting in long lines for. “I like how they’re like really ugly, to be honest,” says junior Jade Stevenson.
“I think the hype is deserved, and they’re very silly. I do think they’re overrated and unfortunately, I am not an OG fan,” Stevenson adds.
For the typical Labubu preachers, the majority of the appeal lies in how Labubus have unique features that aren’t typically seen in American toys. The element of certain toys being hidden behind a blind box also adds to their charm.
Others, however, aren’t as convinced. “I think Labubus are pretty dumb. They’re kind of creepy and very overpriced,” says Morgan Merchel. “It’s just a status symbol or like a popularity thing. I don’t know how to describe it, but I personally don’t see the appeal or understand the hype.”
“It’s just a stuffed animal, basically, that you put on a keychain,” Merchel adds. “Nothing crazy and not deserving of the amount of hype it gets or how much people pay for them,” says Merchel.
At the end of the day, Labubus aren’t for everyone. Some people love their weird designs and collect them, while others just don’t get the hype. Either way, they’ve definitely left their mark on pop culture.
