GHS’s freshmen class kicked off homecoming week last Monday with their skit themed around the Illumination animation studio, with the sophomores’ Sony Pictures themed skit taking place on the following day. Wednesday morning, the juniors arrived on campus bright and early to set up their Disney pre-skit, and the senior class did the same for their Pixar theme on Thursday.
While all four grades write and perform a skit each year, complete with dances and props, only the upperclassmen take over the quad for pre-skit. This often involves setting up food booths, decorating the campus, and dressing up as characters that fit the theme.
The costume factor is a large part of pre-skit, as students are allowed to come up with their own costume ideas. Many students will dress up with friends, and roam the quad in the morning while in character.
The junior pre-skit featured Disney characters such as Lilo and Stitch, Snow White’s seven dwarves, and Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum. Juniors Arshia Mittal and Anushka Rana, who were dressed as Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf, said that while pre-skit required “some preparation, it was just fun and good vibes.” They also indicated that they would be participating again their senior year, which was a sentiment seemingly shared by most of this year’s participants. Davis Wong (11) was dressed as Li Shang from “Mulan,” and said that the preparation process was “a little stressful because I put this [the costume] together yesterday,” but that he would “100% do this again next year. It was super fun.”
While the energy at junior pre-skit was high, some students commented that they felt the theming was lacking. Junior Alyo Leniashina stated that “our class got lucky with the Disney theme, but we’re not utilizing it like we should.” However, she did admit that a lot of people from her class dressed up and had good energy.
The senior pre-skit featured even more dramatic decorations, including balloon arches “Monster’s Inc.” themed-posters. Senior Charlie Hertz, dressed as one of the bears from “Brave,” said that “pre-skit has been very fun,” but that she wished there was “more communication through things other than Instagram for people who don’t have Instagram to know what’s going on.” Overall, the senior pre-skit saw a huge turnout of cosplayers, including Lauren Meier who dressed as Kevin from the animated film “Up.”
With Homecoming week now coming to a close, students eagerly await the finale: the football game, and later, the dance. Pre-skit was as fun this year as it has been in years past, and next year promises to be just as chaotic and wonderful as ever.
