How active are Granada High School students in their day to day lives. 2025 has been a very profitable year for gyms and fitness in general. Some of the main factors of this increase in activity in younger generations are social media, greater emphasis on health and wellness, and also the gym becoming a social hub for young people. With this in mind how do Granada Students compare to this trend of increased activity?
The trend of going to the gym and exercising has been a very popular hobby recently. It feels like everyone is doing some sort of physical activity, whether it be sports, going to the gym, or even going on a run once in a while.
50 Granada Students were asked if they worked out, if they said yes they would then be asked if they had a gym membership. Here are the results.
38 students out of the 50 were interviewed which is 76 percent . This seems to lead to an assumption that a large portion of Granada students do some kind of exercise which consists of sports, lifting weights, or light exercise. Out of the people that workout, 18 of them have been to the gym or had a gym membership, which is 36 percent of the group.
Why is this amount so high? There are many different factors that could play into this.Â
Audrey Hovda (11) stated, “I think people some of the main reasons that our generation is working out so much is because of things such as social media which puts like a higher emphasis on health and well being”
Body image is a very important factor when it comes to wanting to exercise. Many teens struggle with how they view themselves. Going to the gym and exercising could be a way that they could improve upon how they view themselves.
There is also the factor of social media being a factor with fitness content on apps such as TikTok and Instagram becoming much more popular. This introduces fitness to a much wider amount of young people showing them how to take care of themselves through fitness and physical health. Fitness influencers play a very large part in this showing what young people could look like if they put in work and effort into themselves and their health.
The social media aspect around the gym is very important for the rise of gym culture and the fitness community.Â
“The reason I started going to the gym in the first place was from social media, I would see videos of people who looked amazing and I was like I wanna be like them,” said Hovda
There are also some negatives that come about when talking about the fitness community. Many fitness influencers fake their body image with effects, angles, and lighting. This can lead to people having unrealistic expectations of their bodies and believing that they are less than everyone because of this.
Daniel Miller (12) said, “I feel like the gym and social media are completely different, when you see these massive guys every other second your brain starts to think that everyone in the world is like that, when actually not everyone is that jacked”
Going to the gym and exerting yourself in general also has many different mental health benefits that younger generations view as important for overall health. Working out produces endorphins which are usually linked to a better mood. Exercising, coupled together with a good diet can be very beneficial to one’s mental and physical health, boosting your life in many different ways.
“Everytime I do something physical I feel better every time, like last night I was in a bad mood, but then I went to the gym and it made me feel better,” said Miller
The benefits of exercising and being active have many benefits and Granada students know this as seen in the amount of people who do workout.
