Homecoming and skit are staples at Granada High School, serving as a way to bring kids together and get people excited for the school year. Each year, the leadership program picks an overall theme that is shared between the student classes, and those themes are dedicated to a week-long event that allows students to show off their school spirit whilst preparing them for the actual homecoming dance in the beginning of October.
Here is everything you need to know about this upcoming homecoming season of 2025.
This year, the theme chosen for homecoming skits are animation studios, with the class of 2026 being assigned to Pixar, 2027 being Disney, 2028 being Dreamworks and 2029 being Illumination.
“We did a lot of brainstorming and came up with different ideas,” said Emma Carroll (11) when discussing how Leadership comes up with fresh ideas every year.
Homecoming preparation has always been a challenge to leadership, proving to be one of the most hectic times of year due to the cluster of planning all the rehearsals that go into it. Additional events such as Pre-skit, a morning skit for upperclassmen that coincides with the theme of that day, although chaotic, have proven to be some teens’ favorite part of skit week.
“I like the atmosphere around Granada and all the skits and pre-skit,” said Samuel Fischer (11)
Each year, the behind the scenes process of homecoming is always a little different, and each year, Leadership and the Homecoming Committee try their hardest to improve upon the previous year, making it a goal to keep homecoming fresh and exciting.
“We definitely try to get more participation and promote it more, so we just try to hype it up as much as we can,” said Carroll.
Skit practices have started this week, giving students the opportunity to prepare for the upcoming performances. Skit practices are divided up depending on which day of the week it is, with each day focusing on a different aspect of skit, but all usually involving dance and choreography for students.
Students have a little less than a month to learn choreography that will be used on the final skit performances. During skit week, the bell schedule is tweaked to allow students gather on the bleachers between two periods and watch students act out the theme of their specific class.
Similar to previous years, the main feature of skit is related to that year’s theme. For instance, this year the senior skit will be related to Pixar. Throughout the many years of skit, it has proven to be a highlight of many kids and is a student favorite.
Even with all of these factors in mind, Homecoming itself has had a tendency in the past to stir up some controversy among students due to the small space of the actual homecoming area and the underwhelming sense that students get during the event.
“I think that the past homecoming didn’t have enough there. There should be more food options instead of just water, there should be more space to move around than just the little sports quad. I think it should just be a grander event because we’re paying 40 bucks for it,” said Fischer.
Even with these complaints, homecoming is a major event that sells hundreds of tickets and gives students things to look forward to in the new school year.
Homecoming and skit have proven to be staples of a lot of students’ high school experience, and as each year goes by, the production and student activity within homecoming and skit continues to increase and bring new awareness to the behind the scenes of skit and homecoming.
“It’s going to be such a good homecoming year,” said Carroll.
