New approval rating polls have been released showing that Donald Trump’s approval in the United States has fallen sharply since his first 100 days, and his so-called “honeymoon period” that presidents enjoy at the onset of a new term has evaporated (he began with a 47% approval). The Washington Post, ABC News, and Ipsos found an approval rating of 39% and a disapproval rating of 55%, the worst scores of any president’s 100-day mark since modern polling began during Franklin D. Roosevelt’s presidency. By contrast, after the first 100 days of their presidencies, Bill Clinton had a 59% approval rating, George W. Bush a 63%, Barack Obama a 69%, Trump in his first term a 42%, and Joe Biden a 52%.
Meanwhile, issues that voters largely backed Trump on in 2024 were largely dissatisfied with his handling of them. 53% disapproved of his handling of immigration, 61% on the economy, and 61% on foreign policy. Specifically, voters have soured on his enactment of tariffs on other countries, with 72% saying they are likely to cause a recession. Americans were also widely opposed to policies such as mass deportations, cuts to the government workforce and programs, rolling back environmental regulations, ending birthright citizenship, and expanding presidential power.
However, most Americans appeared to be so-called “double haters” of current political systems. While 60% said that Trump is out of touch with most people’s concerns, and 64% said the same thing about the Republican Party, even more, at 69%, say this about the Democrats, showing that voters are still generally more disillusioned with the era of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris and traditional liberal politics than the MAGA governance.
Donald Trump himself responded to the negative polling in traditional Trumpian fashion, posting to his Truth Social account: “We don’t have a Free and Fair ‘Press’ in this Country anymore. We have a Press that writes BAD STORIES, and CHEATS, BIG, ON POLLS. IT IS COMPROMISED AND CORRUPT. SAD!”
No response came from the pollsters.
