Women’s Empowerment Club or WEC, is a brand new club on campus this year. They provide a safe space towards all women within Granada high school and hope to help women with their struggles they face and how to overcome them.
Their goal for this school year is to understand how to manage a club, such as: coordinating events, setting up budgets, inviting guest speakers and so much more.
Co-president Ashlin Liao states,¨Our goal for this year tactically, is to learn how to coordinate events with guest speakers and to better organize meetings. Since it is our first year hosting this club we will need to figure out spending limits, charity donations, and more.¨
Secretary Addison Giacomazzi thinks that their club´s purpose is to create a safe environment for all girls in Granada.
“I want to create a safe space for women and girls on campus to feel comfortable enough to talk about serious topics, share about their own lives, and discuss so we can not only find empathy towards one another, but also build a supportive community so no woman feels alone or silenced. We girls have to look out for one another,” said Giacomazzi.
WEC has meetings every other Tuesday in room 502. With each meeting having a topic to discuss on different aspects that women could possibly struggle with. They include fun activities and games to bring together women and just to have fun.
Giacomazzi said,¨Each meeting we will have a new topic that we will discuss, whether it be centered around mental health, struggles women face in the real world, overcoming fears and stereotypes, or even just loving our bodies.¨
The club is a necessity especially for young women especially in high school. With this day and age unrealistic expectations are thrown at young girls causing them to feel insecure. Women Empowerment stands out amongst other clubs as it gives everyone a voice and allows for everyone to feel heard.
Giacomazzi expressed, ¨This club is different from other clubs at Granada because we intentionally made it so other people felt like their voices would also be heard even if they aren’t officers. Our club is all inclusive and we listen to all suggestions because we want our members to learn to be more confident in themselves and speak their minds on what they feel is important.¨
Women Empowerment Club is an amazing way to gain confidence, friends, memories and so much more. If you’re a GHS student and need some recognition on your struggles of being a woman, or just want to meet some new friends and make memories check out Women Empowerment!
