It’s one of the hottest times of the year in California with temperatures rising to over 100 degrees. It’s important to stay cool during this time. According to the CDC if you are exposed to heat for too long you could be at risk for developing heat stroke, heat exhaustion, heat cramps, and heat rashes. To avoid this, take precautions in keeping yourself cool and healthy. Here are some ways you can do that.
First, stay hydrated. Drink lots of water throughout the day and don’t let yourself get dehydrated. It’s recommended for people to drink at least 6-8 cups of water a day. Make sure to have a water bottle or a way to get water around you throughout the day.
Wear sunscreen every day. This protects the skin from sunburns, skin cancer, eye damage, and more. There are lots of benefits to wearing sunscreen, especially during extremely hot weather.
Turn on your ACs and/or fans if possible. This keeps you cool indoors and allows you to escape the heat and be more comfortable inside.
Try not to go outside when the sun is most intense if you can. This normally ranges from about 10 am to 4 pm. If you’re going outside, avoid doing strenuous activities or exercises.
Finally, know the warning signs of potential heat threats and look out for yourself and the people around you. This can keep more people safe and reduce the risks of damaging your health.
Keeping yourself and the people around you safe, healthy, and cool during the heat is crucial, and the ways to do this are super easy and quick to do. Although the heat is uncomfortable and probably frustrating at times, the good news is it will only last for a few more weeks until the summer season comes to an end. Until then, take precautions and be on the lookout for signs of health concerns.
