Halloween is the time when folks start figuring out their costume situation, bundling up for the incoming chill, and even getting into the spirit by binge-watching loads of horror films. There’s a variety of scary movies that you can choose from and some new ones that you can find on different streaming platforms like Netflix, Disney Plus, Hulu, Tubi, and Peacock.
These are the best, top-rated, interesting, and horrifying films for this scary season. The enjoyment of horror movies can be because they satisfy our curiosity about the dark side of humanity or simply because scary movies let us vicariously explore the nature of evil and they entertain us wonderfully. Recently we have been researching this genre’s top releases. Here is a list (with zero spoilers) of the top 10 new horror movies to binge-watch all through October! Be prepared to be spooked.
No One Will Save You (2023): Starting off strong, a new release by Brian Duffield. This movie begins with Brynn Adams, a seamstress, who lives in her childhood house. She mourns the loss of her mother, Sarah, and her best friend, Maude. Brynn is usually avoided by the town and is known as an outcast. Her peace is disturbed when a few uninvited guests enter her home. All in all, No One Will Save You is certainly perfect for this season and is available to watch on Hulu.
In My Mother’s Skin (2023): This horror film by Kenneth Dagatan is about a supremely unsettling fairy tale set at the end of World War ll when a young girl stranded in the Philippines finds that her duty to protect her dying mother is complicated and is desperately wanting to cure her. She later becomes acquainted with a flesh-eating fairy that devours them all. The movie is accessible on Amazon Prime Video and needs to be watched during this scary season.
Saw X (2023): This film directed by Kevin Greutert is one of the best frightening movies. John Kramer (Jigsaw), is the main antagonist of the Saw franchise. He travels to Mexico in hopes of curing his cancer when he’s duped into paying for a fake miracle surgery. He later finds out a deep secret about the procedure. This infuriates Jigsaw and seeks revenge on the faux doctors in the only way he knows how. Saw X has plentiful twists and the traps are truly horrifying and it’s a must-watch. Fortunately, Saw X is in theaters now so take a trip to your usual movie theater and watch it!
Talk To Me (2022): In the plot, a group of friends learn how to invoke spirits by using a preserved hand. One of the friends in the group takes their discoveries to another level and it summons immoral and unholy spirits. For their group, it seems impossible for them to reverse their actions. This movie is truly wild and skin-crawling. You have been warned! But it’s definitely a must-watch if you’re sincerely a fan of these supernatural movies. Scream VI (2023): Scream VI is a slasher film directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. It is the sequel to Scream (2022) and the sixth installment in the slasher series. The film starts with four survivors of the Ghostface murders leaving Woodsboro behind for a fresh start in New York City. However, they soon find themselves in a fight for their lives when a new killer embarks on a bloody rampage. This movie is available to watch on Paramount+ so go watch it ASAP!
Sick (2022): Sick is a classic get-away gone wrong movie. Parker, one of the main characters, and her best friend are both threatened by visitors. They decide to quarantine (due to the COVID-19 pandemic) at their family’s lake house. The house is majestic. The walls beam with rays of natural light in every corner. They believe that they are safe in the house but it turns out that they are not alone. Sick is a great pick to watch. You can watch on the app Peacock.
Insidious: The Red Door (2023): Insidious, created by James Wan, is a skin-crawling story of a family who, shortly after moving, discovers that dark spirits have possessed their home and that their son has inexplicably fallen into a coma. Josh Lambert heads east to drop his son, Dalton, off at school. However, Dalton’s college dream soon becomes a living nightmare when some uninvited visitors from the supernatural world come and haunt them. Watch this at your own risk! This movie is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
M3GAN (2022): A top-of-the-line, futuristic toy company, Roboticist, uses artificial intelligence to develop M3GAN. Megan is a doll with a realistic touch programmed to emotionally bond with her newly orphaned niece. But when the doll’s programming works too well, she becomes overprotective and the intentions turn south. This film is made by Gerard Johnstone and you can watch this on Peacock and Amazon Prime Video. Although this movie isn’t as scary as the other ones listed, it’s still a great choice and a creative production to watch.
The Exorcist: Believer (2023): The Exorcist focuses on the simultaneous possession of two young girls (apparently by the same demon that haunted the first movie) and the harmonic convergence of parents and clerics trying to liberate them from evil. It’s a prominent horror movie and a must-watch for this spooky season! You can see this film at your nearest local movie theater.
The Nun ll (2023 Amazon, Apple TV): This film is a 2023 American gothic supernatural horror film directed by Michael Chave. It’s about Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga) five years after the events of the first film’s events. When she befriends Debra (Storm Reid), a newbie nun in a crisis of faith, they are put to the test after the Vatican demands Irene perform another miracle. Valak was not destroyed, and she’s reigning terror on religious figures across Europe. As priests fall victim to gruesome demonic murders, from immolations to hangings and more, Irene and Debra rush to a French boarding school to figure out Valak’s motive and how to send her back to hell.
